The Cigna Group and Business Roundtable Convene Employers for Workforce Mental Health Summit

San Francisco - Business Roundtable and The Cigna Group brought together senior business executives and community leaders last week for a Workforce Mental Health Summit in the Bay Area. The event was part of the Business Roundtable Mental Health Initiative, a CEO-led effort to promote and support employee mental health, championed by David Cordani, Chairman and CEO of The Cigna Group.

Cordani began the event by discussing why mental health is a business imperative that impacts every workplace.

“Mental health is a business imperative that affects every company, every team and every individual. At The Cigna Group, we believe employers have both the opportunity and the responsibility to lead in fostering a culture of support and access to care,” said Cordani. “This Summit moved beyond just conversation, prompting corporate action at all levels.”

In conversation with Fortune Executive Editorial Director Diane Brady, Dane Linn, Business Roundtable Senior Vice President of Corporate Initiatives, outlined common challenges employers face in addressing mental health and the innovative solutions companies are implementing to make a difference.

“CEOs are increasingly recognizing that employee mental wellness is central to a productive, healthy workforce. Across industries, companies are embedding mental health support into everything, from benefits packages to workplace culture,” said Linn. “By sharing common challenges and successful strategies to address them, we can scale solutions that meet the needs of today’s evolving workforce.”

The event also featured a conversation with Olympic champion and mental health advocate Simone Biles about her personal journey with mental health and resilience.

Nearly one in four U.S. adults live with a mental illness, and 76% of U.S. workers in 2021 reported experiencing at least one symptom of a mental health condition. Beyond the profound personal impact, mental health challenges have far-reaching consequences on business that impact the whole economy. Missed work due to employee depression alone was estimated in a 2022 analysis to cost the U.S. economy $47.6 billion annually in lost productivity.
