In an op-ed published in The Hill this week, Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN), Ranking Member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, argues that approving the Keystone XL project would protect U.S. national security interests at no cost to taxpayers:
“The core national security benefit of Keystone XL is that Canadian oil will flow to U.S. territory, giving us greater flexibility in our national security affairs, particularly in volatile oil-rich regions. Crude from Keystone XL will be processed in American refineries and the vast majority of the products will be consumed on American soil.”
Business Roundtable supports Keystone XL approval because Keystone is the key to U.S. jobs, economic growth and energy security.
Immediate approval of Keystone XL should be an easy decision.

Business Roundtable (BRT) is an association of chief executive officers of leading U.S. companies with over $6 trillion in annual revenues and more than 14 million employees. BRT member companies comprise nearly a third of the total value of the U.S. stock market and invest more than $150 billion annually in research and development – nearly half of all private U.S. R&D spending. Our companies pay $163 billion in dividends to shareholders and generate an estimated $420 billion in sales for small and medium-sized businesses annually.
BRT companies give nearly $9 billion a year in combined charitable contributions.
