Business Roundtable Statement on Announcement by House Speaker John Boehner

Washington – Business Roundtable President John Engler expressed his appreciation today for Speaker of the House John Boehner’s service upon learning of the Speaker’s announcement he would retire from Congress in October.

“Speaker Boehner has served honorably, with integrity and with a full appreciation for the serious responsibility of being Speaker of the House for the entire House. I was surprised to hear that he will be leaving Congress – and Business Roundtable will miss his leadership.

“The Speaker has worked to strengthen the institution by recognizing the importance of committee chairs, restoring regular order and focusing his efforts on a growth agenda for America. In his earlier responsibility as the Chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, he also worked diligently to support a more educated and skilled workforce.

“Speaker Boehner’s departure will leave a hole, to be sure, but business leaders are confident his successor will continue to focus on economic growth, jobs and the American people.”
