What is Business Roundtable

Business Roundtable (BRT) is an association of chief executive officers of leading U.S. companies working to promote sound public policy and a thriving U.S. economy.

More Than Leaders. Leadership.

Business Roundtable is an association of chief executive officers of leading U.S. companies working to promote a thriving economy and expanded opportunity for all Americans through sound public policy.

About BRT

Maria Ghazal is Senior Vice President & Counsel for Business Roundtable, where she directs strategic initiatives across the organization and oversees policy development and advocacy for the Business Roundtable Corporate Governance, Smart Regulation, and Health and Retirement Committees. She is the organization’s chief advocate on these issues before Congress and federal agencies.

The Corporate Governance Committee is focused on advancing the long-term economic interests of shareholders, workers and consumers, as well as upholding the highest corporate ethical standards. America’s business leaders set the standard for modern, effective corporate governance practices in the Business Roundtable Principles of Corporate Governance.

The Smart Regulation Committee strives to make the federal regulatory system more transparent and open to public engagement; improve the quality of information used in the rulemaking process; require more objective cost-benefit analysis; extend that requirement to so-called independent agencies; and modernize the federal permitting process.

The Health and Retirement Committee works to improve the quality and efficiency of the U.S. health care system and strengthen the long-term viability of the retirement income system.

Prior to joining Business Roundtable, Ghazal was Director of Health Policy at the American Benefits Council, served as Director of Government Relations at Verizon and worked as a Legislative Assistant at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Her career began as an Aide to then-Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY).

Ghazal earned a law degree from American University, a master’s degree in public policy from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree from Bates College. She is a member of the Massachusetts and District of Columbia Bar Associations and The Tax Coalition.
