Letter from Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) to John Castellani Commending Divided We Fail Partnership

Dear John,

I would like to thank the “Divided We Fail” coalition for accurately pointing out that spiraling health care costs pose a tremendous financial burden for American families and businesses and seriously threatens our long-term national prosperity.

The United States spends more on health care as a percentage of GDP than any other industrialized nation, but the quality of health care available is often inconsistent. According to the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, people living in areas of higher health care spending often receive lower quality care than those living in areas where health care spending is lower.

Thank you for your strong support and endorsement of the Medicare Quality Enhancement Act which I introduced with Senator Clinton earlier this year. As you know, the federal government continues to sit on a treasure trove of information that can be used to dramatically improve health care quality, while making it more affordable for all Americans. This legislation would require the federal government to share this valuable information – providing the public with the information needed to make educated health care decisions, which will in turn encourage higher-quality care and discourage unnecessary spending. With your help we were also able to craft the language to protect the privacy of Medicare beneficiaries.

In order for America’s health care system to improve, we need to have a better understanding of the quality of care we are purchasing. I appreciate the staunch support of the “Divided We Fail” campaign on this important legislation and look forward to advancing this bipartisan legislation in the 110th Congress with your support.

Sincerely,

Senator Judd Gregg
United States Senator
