We commend the Ways and Means Committeefor examining the potential impact of the health care reform law on the economy and employers’ ability to hire. We encourage Congress to look at health care reform as an ongoing process – more work is needed. If done right, health care reform should slow rising costs, improve the quality of care and increase access to care for all Americans.

Business Roundtable is concerned by President Obama’s comments last night on taxing the oil and natural gas industry. We fully support investments in renewables, and believe alternative sources are a vital part of the balanced approach we need to simultaneously address our energy, environmental and economic needs. However, now is not the time to be targeting any industry with job-destroying taxes.

Business Roundtable is heartened by President Obama’s focus on American competitiveness. U.S. job creation and long-term growth depend on a robust economic climate. The priorities laid out tonight by the President must now be analyzed closely to ensure they will promote, rather than stifle, an environment where the private sector can create jobs and expand the economy.

We were pleased that the President highlighted the importance of negotiating and passing international trade and investment agreements. American competiveness depends on the ability of our companies and workers to export and invest in markets around the world – markets where more than 95 percent of potential customers for U.S. goods and services reside. The Administration and Congress must work together to pass pending agreements with Korea, Panama and Colombia.

We were pleased that the President touched on the need for a well-educated and prepared workforce. The U.S. education system has not kept pace with the economy’s growing requirement for increased education and that of our global competitors. Current and future American students and workers need a stronger education and higher skills to compete in today’s global economy. Our education system needs to be held accountable for results and getting a much better return on taxpayers’ investment.
