Senate Has Historic Opportunity to Advance Meaningful Immigration Reform

Bipartisan Legislation Would ‘Secure the Border, Bring People out of the Shadows, Keep America Competitive,’ Says Motorola’s Greg Brown

Washington – Business Roundtable, representing CEOs of leading U.S. companies from every sector of the economy, today urged U.S. Senators to approve S. 744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, and keep the momentum building for real, bipartisan solutions this year.

“Senators need to seize this opportunity to secure the border, bring people out of the shadows, and keep America competitive in the global economy, by attracting the world’s best and brightest,” said Greg Brown, Chairman & CEO of Motorola Solutions, Inc. and Chair of Business Roundtable’s Select Committee on Immigration. “If America doesn’t address these problems now, we will find ourselves revisiting them in five, 10, 15 years, and in each intervening year, the problem will get worse. This legislation on immigration reform is a positive step forward for America. We urge Senators to approve S. 744 and enact real solutions to fix America’s broken immigration system.”

“The Senate bill combines enhanced border security requirements with mandatory employment verification,” said Business Roundtable President John Engler. “This will ensure the American public doesn’t look around 20 years from now and find millions more people living among us who are not legally entitled to be here.”

Business Roundtable outlined earlier this year the major challenges that must be addressed by any reform measure in “Taking Action on Immigration: Realistic Solutions for Fixing a Broken System,” which included policy recommendations for boosting U.S. growth and competitiveness by improving security and enforcing immigration laws; welcoming legal immigrant workers to contribute to America; and finding a solution for unauthorized immigrants.
