Business Roundtable Statement on H.R. 2454, “The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009”

Washington – “As business leaders, the CEOs of Business Roundtable are committed to taking action to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and put our nation on a more sustainable path. We commend the House of Representatives for taking action in this critical area. However, H.R. 2454 falls short of providing a roadmap to an environmentally and economically sustainable future,” said John J. Castellani, President of Business Roundtable.

“The bill ignores the role that oil and natural gas must play in the transition to a low-carbon future, as well as nuclear energy’s central role in reducing America’s carbon footprint. To achieve the GHG reductions called for in the bill, we not only need to use energy more efficiently, but also must deploy a balanced, comprehensive portfolio of new low-energy technologies.”

“We support the House’s prioritization of this issue and stand ready to work with leaders of Congress on both sides of the aisle to create legislation that can achieve the large-scale GHG reductions necessary to address the risk of climate change, while also maintaining robust economic growth and enhancing America’s energy security.”
