Business Roundtable Launches Blitz During World Trade Month

Monthlong Activities Highlight Importance of Trade at National, State and Local Levels

WashingtonBusiness Roundtable, representing CEOs of leading U.S. companies from every sector of the economy, today announced a monthlong blitz to emphasize the benefits of trade and the importance of pending U.S. trade opportunities to supporting U.S. growth and jobs. The multipronged blitz will include Capitol Hill outreach, traditional and digital media activities, grassroots engagement, op-ed placements, paid advertising and member company engagement to promote the benefits of trade.

“Trade supports more than one in five American jobs and plays a critical economic role all across the country,” said Doug Oberhelman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Caterpillar Inc. and Chair of Business Roundtable’s International Engagement Committee. “To strengthen the U.S. economy and create jobs, we must seize opportunities to open new markets for U.S. businesses, large and small. That includes passing Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation, completing high-standard trade agreements and reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank. This campaign will emphasize the importance of trade and acting on these opportunities for economic growth and to create jobs here at home. ”

The blitz highlights the opportunities for the United States from expanded trade with other countries, including the passage of TPA, which helps put into place U.S. trade agreements; reauthorization of the U.S. Export-Import Bank, which facilitates the sale of U.S. products abroad; and pending trade negotiations including the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, and the Trade in Services Agreement.

Major components of the blitz include:

  • Grassroots outreach in states;
  • Aggressive social media campaign highlighting the jobs supported by trade in each state;
  • Op-ed placements on trade and editorial board outreach with local newspapers;
  • Graphics and videos that show how trade helps companies and their workers in states;
  • Outreach to members of Congress in Washington and in their home states and districts on the importance of trade;
  • Targeted media outreach in all 50 states;
  • Coordination of advocacy efforts with Business Roundtable member companies; and
  • Outreach to state governors and economic development agencies.
