Liz Dougherty, Partner at Jones Day, Will Also Serve as Corporate Secretary; Maria Ghazal Named Senior Vice President and Counsel

Washington – Business Roundtable today announced that Liz Dougherty, currently a partner at Jones Day, will become General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for the CEO-member association, effective July 19.

Business Roundtable also announced that Maria Ghazal, an 11-year veteran of the organization, has been promoted to Senior Vice President and Counsel.

As General Counsel, Dougherty will provide counsel to the organization on a broad range of legal issues and oversee the work of outside counsel. Dougherty will also manage the Health and Retirement Committee.

“Business Roundtable will benefit enormously from Liz Dougherty’s extensive legal experience and knowledge of the federal government,” said Joshua Bolten, President & CEO of Business Roundtable. “She will also be a strong voice for the business community on health care issues, as they continue to be at the center of important policy debates.”

At Jones Day, Dougherty is a member of the law firm’s Labor and Employment practice, where she advises clients on workplace legal and policy issues. From 2006 to 2012, she served as a board member and Chairman of the National Mediation Board, an independent agency that oversees labor relations in the airline and railroad industries.

Earlier in her career, Dougherty served as a special assistant to President George W. Bush for domestic policy, where she advised the President on labor and transportation policy issues, and as Chief Counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Employment, Safety, and Training. She holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia and an A.B. from Duke University.

In her new position as Senior Vice President and Counsel, Ghazal will assume additional management duties and oversee strategic initiatives. She will also take over management of the Smart Regulation Committee while continuing to manage the Corporate Governance Committee.

Ghazal began at Business Roundtable in 2005 as a Vice President, supervising health and retirement issues. In her tenure, Ghazal has held numerous other leadership positions in the organization, including serving as General Counsel for the past two years.

“Maria Ghazal has been a great asset to Business Roundtable throughout her career here,” Bolten said. “We are delighted that she will be bringing her talents and experience to many new assignments, including the policy work that’s at the heart of what the Roundtable does.”

Ghazal earned a law degree from American University, a master’s degree in public policy from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree from Bates College.
