Preventing a Decline in America's Living Standards

Jul 14, 2014

Three trends could lead to a decline in America's standard of living within the next 15 years, a new report being released by Accenture says.

Stephen "Steve" J. Rohleder, Accenture's group chief executive for North America, previewed the report in remarks to the National Association of Governors in Nashville, TN, and on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program today. (NGA video; Rohleder begins about 22 minutes in.)

The three undesirable trends could drop standards of living by 9 percent over the next 15 years, reverting to the 2000 level.

He identified the three as:

  • A decline in working-age population (18-65), fueled largely by the retirement of the baby boomer generation.
  • Falling workforce participation. Today, Rohleder said, participation rates are at their lowest level since 1977.
  • Stagnating productivity.

Rising productivity can offset the other two trends, but with when all three are headed in the wrong direction, that's a perfect storm, Rohleder said.

How can state governments help? Accenture had recommendations.

1. Create analytics on state’s talent supply and demand

2. Develop talent-supply pipeline for small-medium-sized businesses

3. Offer job seekers personalized road maps [i.e., information on skills and potential career paths]

4. Focus on goal of improving standard of living
