Stephen M. Chipman is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Grant Thornton LLP. Grant Thornton LLP is the US member firm of Grant Thornton International Ltd., one of the world’s leading organizations of independent audit, tax and advisory firms.
In his more than 30 years with Grant Thornton, Chipman has held numerous leadership positions throughout Europe, North America and Asia, developing a unique combination of international and US business experience. Prior to becoming US CEO, he served two years as CEO of Grant Thornton China Management Corporation where he was responsible for leading the development and growth of services for Grant Thornton in China. In the United States, he has served as Central region managing partner, Dallas office managing partner, and national managing partner Global Services. He was the inaugural worldwide director of the Grant Thornton International Business Centers. As a member of the US firm’s senior leadership team since 2003, Chipman chaired a number of strategic initiatives, including the Global and China Initiatives and the inaugural Grant Thornton Experience Leadership Council. In addition, he represented the US member firm of Grant Thornton LLP on the International Policy Board of Grant Thornton International and represented China on the Grant Thornton International Board of Governors for which he currently represents the United States.
Chipman is a member of the Center for Audit Quality Governing Board, whose mission is to improve audit quality for public companies and to improve the capital market system, and serves on the Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee and the International Engagement Committee for the Business Roundtable. He also serves on the board of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the Ravinia Festival Board of Trustees and the Half the Sky Foundation Board, a charitable organization that works to improve conditions in Chinese orphanages. He is an active member of the Economic Club of Chicago and a member of the British-American Business Council.
